Grand Knight Messages

August 16th 2017 Update

Hello Brothers, Wives and Friends,

We had a wonderful turn out for our back to school picnic last Sunday.  As you can see from the picture above a constant stream of hungry students and parents visited our tent.  We raised $ 633.00 which will go toward the memorial for the Unborn, Forgotten and Abuses.  Special thanks to the team that came out to set up, cook and clean up for this very worthy community event.

Our immediate Past Grand Knight Chris Hanes suggested that I inform to read past our Grand Knight message as I am using the upcoming activities section below for announcements and help.  In the past Chris embedded those events into his overall message.  Actually, let me know how you prefer to stay current.  To that end, we will be leveraging our public website:  www.kofc7186.org so that potential members can read up on our activities, view pictures, etc.

One of our new members recently commented to me that our council is young, vibrant and warming.  He is glad he had the chance to transfer to our council from Greenville SC.  Speaking of him, please welcome fourth degree knight Sir Jason Horner (pictured above in the red shirt) and his family.  It is our pleasure to have him as he quickly jumped in and helped out at the back to school picnic!

Grand Knight's Message

Hello, Brothers and Friends!

Our Worthy Supreme Council and Worthy State Officers are currently at the Supreme convention laying out the plans for the 2017 - 2018 fraternal year.  Led by Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, he delivered a message of 'Convinced of God's Love and Power.  Our own council is driven by these some powerful words.

Last night, Tuesday August 01, your newly elected officers met to discuss plans for our upcoming year.  The meeting was attended by ten of your brothers engaged in spirited conversation with a joint conviction to make a difference in our own community.  You will hear more about the plans/changes at our monthly business meeting this Thursday August 03.  A few summary points:

  • New Knights of Columbus council 7186 shirts to be made available (ie no charge) to all people volunteering at our functions.
  • All new members to receive a council shirt as described above
  • Plans underway for a meal event after each mass at least once a month
  • New plans to re-engage our fellow brothers and to seek new members
  • We need more volunteers to fill Director and Org Chart positions
  • Re-engage our commitment to the new sculpture for "the unborn, forgotten and abused"

As a united fraternal organization, we will make a difference, your leadership team of Officers and Directors have committed to a great year and now we need each one of you to come together in unity!

Dedication of our New Church

Hello, Brothers and Friends!

We had an absolute beautiful Dedication Ceremony that was attended by over 1500 parishioners and friends.  The Ceremony and Mass was celebrated by Bishop Elect of Atlanta,
Bishop-designate Shlesinger, and various Pastors including Monsignor John Wall.  I personally was overwhelmed whenBishop-designate Shlesinger said "Father Staib unlock the doors to your Church".

The moment was a culmination of the vision of the late Bishop Gossman and kept moving through the hard work of Father Staib.  He led our Parish Community in a very calm and reverent manner over the past sixteen years and many felt that our new Church is a gift from God for his hard work and love.

I hope everyone has had a chance to visit our new Church and feel the power of our faith community alive and well in the beauty of St. Mary Magdalene Church!  We celebrated new life this past weekend with nine Baptisms!

We have a few items coming up this weekend.  Friday evening is the rain-out makeup game at the Holly Springs Salamanders.  The signup is filling up so please see the following link and come out for some fun.  Thanks again to IPGK Chris Hanes for organizing the first outing and for ensuring that we received tickets to Friday's game.

The Installation Ceremony and Family Dinner is this Saturday after the 5PM Mass.  Come join us as we install our newest Grand Knight Umberto Norigenna:

October comes to a close

Hello, Brothers!

We have a couple upcoming activities this weekend and our monthly meeting next Thursday.  I will be out of town the next few days so I hope to hear things went well in my absence.  Our attendance drawing is up to $120 so if you haven’t been to a meeting in a while you should really consider coming out.  We ended before 8:30 last month and expect to have a relatively short meeting again this month as well.

Our second Wives’ Appreciation Night of the year is Friday, October 28th from 6:00-8:00PM at Apex Fine Wine.  Thank you to Brother Eric Stokes for hosting us!  This will be a great opportunity to hang out with other couples, show appreciation to our lovely wives, drink some fine wine, and eat some light appetizers.  The tasting is covered by the Council but tipping the staff is greatly appreciated.  Please RSVP here

Our Fall Adopt-A-Highway make-up event is this Saturday October 29th!   Please Sign uphere.   Plan to meet at Olive Chapel Elementary School (1751 Olive Chapel Rd, Apex, NC 27502) at 8:30 AM.  Children must be 12 years old to participate.  Please consider participating in this truly local opportunity, literally just down the street!  As usual, drinks and snacks will be provided.  Bags, gloves, vests, and sticks to pick up trash will also be available.  If you have not yet volunteered for Adopt-A-Highway, please watch the Adopt a Highway Safety Video Clip

The STMM Music Ministry plays a critical role in making the gym feel like a church and they need our help to make the new church feel like a cathedral when it opens!  We are sponsoring a fundraising dinner and concert, STMM Christmas Jam, on Saturday, December 10th 2016, 6:00 – 9:00PM.  Dinner will be served in the cafeteria from 6:00 to 7:15 and the concert will start at 7:30 in the gym.  ALL PROCEEDS will BENEFIT the STMM Music Ministry.  Through sales of dinner and concert tickets, raffle tickets, and tax deductible donations, we hope to raise over $25,000 to put toward the purchase of a grand piano and other much needed Music Ministry resources.  Please check out the Christmas Jam flyer here.  We need volunteers to sell tickets and collect donations after all Masses leading up to the Christmas Jam.  Please sign up here.

The CPO annual holiday box prep is scheduled for Saturday, November 5th from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm.  In addition to preparing holiday boxes, we will donate the coats we purchased from Coats for Kids to the CPO.  This is will be a great day of Charity so please consider coming out.  Thank you to Mike Rota for coordinating!  Please sign up here.

We are sponsoring a blood drive on Saturday, November 19th at STMM.  Our numbers have been down the last few blood drives and if we do not meet the required number of 30 donors this may be the last blood drive for our parish due to Rex’s expenses.  Please donate if possible and get the word out so we can continue sponsoring this important cause.

In closing, as October and Respect Life Month comes to an end, our Culture of Life Director, Paul Mastropolo, asked me to pass along a video.  We know politics and religion can get dicey so, fair warning, the priest in the video boldly talks about the importance of respect life in the upcoming election.  We ask those of you not easily offended to please consider watching :)  Regardless of your beliefs or politics I ask you all to please go out and vote.  Thank you and have a great week!

Upcoming Wive's Appreciation Night

Hello, Brothers!

I hope you all made it through the hurricane without incident.  Please join me in praying for all those affected by Hurricane Matthew.  The last week was eventful and we have a few activities in the coming weeks.  We had good attendance at the meeting last Thursday but the attendance drawing is still unclaimed and up to $120.  Chair set up was not as well attended as the meeting and we are dangerously close to losing our building privileges.  Chair set up is a quick and easy way to serve our church if we get more than a couple people to help.  Thank you to Dan Cantrell, Bob Hooper, and the 1st Degree Team for their work on Monday night.  We had a 1st and 2nd Degree and welcomed several new Brothers to our Council.

Adopt a highway!

Hello, Brothers!

Thank you to everyone who served in some capacity last weekend!  Because of you we successfully supported the Catholic Parish Outreach food drive and raised over $2,000 at the Apex Music Fest!  In addition to supporting the CPO food drive we donated $500 which will feed 20 families for a full week.  Imagine all those family meals around the table we are helping those less fortunate than us have together!  Special thanks to Mike Rota for coordinating our support of the CPO food drive and to Jim Piasecki and Tom Blum for their work to support the Apex Music Fest fundraiser.  Please see the separate message from Jim below.

This is a final reminder about our first Family Appreciation Night of the Fraternal Year.  Please join us this Friday, September 23rd from 6:00 to approximately 8:00PM at Scott’s Mill Clubhouse.  The event will be potluck.  The Council will provide some roasted chicken and bottled water but we will need some other entrée options and all sides, deserts, etc.  Please RSVP and signup here.

A grand new year!

Hello, Brothers!

I made it past the first week… hooray!  In that time we had a QUICK meeting as promised (32 minutes – a new record I think) where we approved the budget for the 2016-2017 Fiscal Year.  We also held the installation ceremony and luncheon after the 10:45 Mass on Sunday.  The ceremony and luncheon were both moving… the ceremony thanks to District Deputy Scott Strednak’s wonderful reading as well as all the family members in attendance to support the new officers and the luncheon thanks to Umberto Norigenna’s table setting in honor of John Sherland.  At the luncheon PGK Paul McGrath gave out awards for the last year.  Please congratulate the following people the next time you see them:

Knight of the Year - Jim Piasecki
Family of the Year - Steve and Jackie Veno
Rookie of the Year - Matt Maiers
Golden Knight of the Year - Frank DeMaria

Thank you to all the Brothers and family members who came to the activities in the last week!  We hope to see more Brothers and family members at upcoming activities.

Welcome Grand Knight Chris Hanes

Hello, Brothers!

Thank you for the honor of electing me to serve you as Grand Knight for 2016-2017!  Also, I would be remiss if I did not give special thanks to our now Past Grand Knight Paul McGrath for his leadership, support, and guidance over the past 2 years.  I owe Paul a lot for encouraging me to transfer to Council 7186 and get involved.  I look forward to working with all of you over the coming year to do more good for our Council, Church, and Community.

Please join us this Thursday, July 7th for a QUICK meeting to approve the budget for the coming year and review some exciting activities we have planned.  One thing I will mention now is that we will be doing quarterly Brotherhood, Family Appreciation, and Wives Appreciation activities.  These activities, along with our traditional fundraising activities, are meant to provide well-rounded opportunities to espouse our values of Charity, Unity, and Fraternity.

Vivat Jesus!
